South Dakota is one of the least populated states in the United States and enjoys some of the lowest unemployment rates nationwide (2.8 percent was recorded in March 2017). Although the population is small, the people of this state are known for their friendly nature. South Dakota’s landscape varies from majestic hills to flat plains. It is home to one of America’s greatest landmarks, Mount Rushmore. The weather varies greatly from hot summers to snowy winters. Ultrasound Technician Schools in South Dakota

Unlike other states, there are not many sonography schools in South Dakota. Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls is currently the only South Dakota sonography schools.

This sonography school offers an Associates of Science degree program with specialities in Abdominal/OB/GYN. The cost for the program which can be completed in 6 semesters costs $29,775 (at the time of writing this article). Upon completion of this DMS programs students are eligible to sit the examination for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) Certification.

Generally spaces are limited so get yourself on their waiting list. It will be worth it. In the meantime you can try and get some of their prerequisites out of the way.

You should also check out some of the local hospitals to see if they run any medical sonography courses.

Career Outlook for Sonographers

There are 360 diagnostic medical sonographers currently employed in South Dakota. Due to the non-invasive nature of sonography and the increase of cardiac health concerns, the number of diagnostic medical sonographers is expect to slowly rise over the next few years. Job growth in South Dakota alone is projected at 19.5 percent during 2014-2014.

The average salary of a sonographer technician in South Dakota is $58,730 (May 2016) yearly and is considerably higher than the average salary recorded in May 2011 of $52,600.

The top employers of sonographers in the State of New Mexico include: Rapid City Regional Hospital, Sanford USD Medical Center, Avera St Lukes Hospital-Amberdeen, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital- Yankton, Veterans Administration Hospital. However graduates can seek work in various medical institutions ranging from: mobile imaging companies, hospitals, outpatient care centers and specialized health facilities.
