Many people travel to Utah every year because of the many ski resorts. It is known for cold winters and was home to the Winter Olympics in 2002. It has a stable economy and offers a number of national parks that are breathtaking during any time of the year. Medical schools and top-notch facilities are in abundance throughout the state and many are taking advantage of cutting edge technology – including new 3D and 4D ultrasounds. Utah ultrasound technician schools can help many get started in a career as an ultrasound technician.

Ultrasound Technician Education in Utah

Receiving a sonography education in Utah is simple because of the many schools available. There are 9 schools, including technical colleges, where it is possible to get a certificate or degree in sonography.

Schools such as Provo College will offer certificate programs, which take about one year to complete. Other schools, including Eastgate College, offer A.S. degrees in sonography, which take about two years to complete.

In addition to certificate and associate degrees, it is also possible to earn a bachelor’s degree. The degree that a person obtains is going to depend upon how long they want to be in school and what their overall career goals are. Most people are able to get started in the career field with a certificate program – though many more go back to school at one point or another to earn at least an associate’s degree.

Expenses for attending a sonography program in Utah can vary with the higher tuition being at private universities. Other expenses that may be incurred are for books, lab fees, and room/board. Another thing that varies by school is the graduation rate. Sonography schools have a higher graduation rate than other majors, which might have to do with the fact that there is a significant amount of growth within the career field.

Additionally, students are able to pay for a sonography education with scholarships and grants. These can dramatically reduce the amount that is due out-of-pocket. The federal government offers grants upon completing the FAFSA. The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography offers multiple scholarships. Various scholarships also exist for veterans, different minority groups, and more.

Career Outlook for Sonographers in Utah

The outlook for ultrasound tech careers is high in Utah. Much of this has to do with the constantly evolving technology. 3D and 4D ultrasound technology has made it possible for more doctors to use ultrasounds as diagnostic tools to provide better care to patients. As more doctors take advantage of these machines, more sonographers are in demand.

While there are opportunities throughout the entire state, there are even more opportunities in the larger cities such as Salt Lake City and Provo. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has estimated that there is growth of 44% slotted to take place around the country for sonographers – and this is a higher growth than many other careers.

The BLS also estimates salaries. The median salary in Utah for an ultrasound technician/sonographer is $76,310. This is several thousand dollars more than the median salary in the country. The salary that a person earns is going to be dependent upon the education they have, the experience they have and even the facility that they work in.

Very few sonographers are retiring right now. Many sonographers currently in the field are being given incentives to stay because of shortages within the career field. With new technology becoming available almost annually, sonographers must also stay in school for continuing education credits.

Rewarding careers as a sonographer are started every year – and it’s all possible by attending one of the sonography schools in Utah.
